Simulating chemistry using quantum computers.

چکیده
The difficulty of simulating quantum systems, well known to quantum chemists, prompted the idea of quantum computation. One can avoid the steep scaling associated with the exact simulation of increasingly large quantum systems on conventional computers, by mapping the quantum system to another, more controllable one. In this review, we discuss to what extent the ideas in quantum computation, now a well-established field, have been applied to chemical problems. We describe algorithms that achieve significant advantages for the electronic-structure problem, the simulation of chemical dynamics, protein folding, and other tasks. Although theory is still ahead of experiment, we outline recent advances that have led to the first chemical calculations on small quantum information processors.

متن کاملGate count estimates for performing quantum chemistry on small quantum computers
As quantum computing technology improves and quantum computers with a small but non-trivial number of N ≥ 100 qubits appear feasible in the near future the question of possible applications of small quantum computers gains importance. One frequently mentioned application is Feynman’s original proposal of simulating quantum systems, and in particular the electronic structure of molecules and mat...
متن کاملSimulating quantum non-integrable systems with quantum computers
An impossibility theorem on approximately simulating quantum non-integrable Hamiltonian systems by quantum computers is presented here. This result is obtained by a quantum-mechanically interpretation of Ge-Marsden's impossibility result about simulating classically non-integrable Hamiltonian systems using integration schemes preserving symplectic (Lie-Poisson) property. Discussion is devoted t...

متن کاملThe Bravyi-Kitaev transformation for quantum computation of electronic structure.
Quantum simulation is an important application of future quantum computers with applications in quantum chemistry, condensed matter, and beyond. Quantum simulation of fermionic systems presents a specific challenge. The Jordan-Wigner transformation allows for representation of a fermionic operator by O(n) qubit operations. Here, we develop an alternative method of simulating fermions with qubit...
